The grey seal first appeared earlier this month in Shoe Pond within the metropolis of Beverly, northeast of Boston. The animal is believed to have traveled to the pond from the ocean through a river and drainage pipes.

The seal shortly grew to become a neighborhood attraction and even named “Shoebert” after its chosen pond.

Firefighters and wildlife specialists used boats and large nets in an effort to seize the wily animal Thursday, however gave up after a number of fruitless hours.
