New York Metropolis officials Tuesday stated they want main credit-card companies to create a code to track purchases of weapons and ammunition to help regulation enforcement strive to preserve higher tabs on criminals.
Officials with the town’s pension funds — the New York Metropolis Workers’ Retirement System, Academics’ Retirement System and Board of Training Retirement System — together with Mayor Adams and Metropolis Comptroller Brad Lander stated they’re submitting a shareholder proposal to that finish.
They’re requesting that credit-card companies reminiscent of American Specific, Mastercard and Visa add a brand new four-digit “merchant code” that will classify gun and ammunition shops on particular person statements when purchases are made.
“We are not leaving any stone unturned,” Adams stated at a Metropolis Corridor press convention.
The brand new code would help companies track when suspicious purchases are made and may help regulation enforcement even cease shootings earlier than they occur, proponents stated.
